Cincuenta Part 2: La Mirage is Real

After much deliberation we decided to spend my actual birthday at La Mirage. Our friend Lidia suggested we have lunch and a spa treatment, and, as neither of us had ever had a spa treatment before, we thought it would be a good adventure. We had heard of La Mirage in our research about Cotacachi and were very interested to see it in person. It is one of the best hotels in Ecuador and the Queen of Spain stayed there. It is part of the French Relais & Châteaux ‘global fellowship’ of individual luxury hotels.

Yes, right here in small town Cotacachi, just off Leather street, is this amazing world class hotel and spa. So off we went. It was exquisite. From the appetizer served in a music box to the antique silver coffee pot, the lunch was superb. We sat in a little glass alcove overlooking a garden with strolling peacocks and buzzing hummingbirds, and through the trees we caught glimpses of Papa Imbabura. We ate sumptuous food and listened to beautiful music, and felt so lucky. Then we went to the spa!

We each had a 90-minute treatment that involved massages and wraps with creams, lotions, and masks all made from local botanicals that were simply intoxicating. Each treatment room has its own fireplace — it was like being in a dream. Afterwards, we met up and soaked in a jacuzzi surrounded by lush flowers and trees, followed by a eucalyptus steam bath. We completed our afternoon with  a swim in the inviting pool. An amazing day and a great way to spend my fiftieth birthday — it was perfecto!
