Since there are lots of trees around, you would think getting a fire going would be a no-brainer. You would be wrong! It took Lori several days of hard slogging — including beating back the snake-infested weeds — to gather enough wood and kindling to start our first fire (I bet you didn’t know that fire was first discovered by a woman, and so Lori is following in a long tradition of fire-starting women). Of course all the hard work was well worth it in the end as we sat mesmerized in front of the fire last night, sipping our Chilean red wine, listening to the sharp crackling of the bamboo and hardwood, and the mellow jazz musings of John Coltrane.
